Waist circumference cutoff points to identify subjects with insulin resistance in a Colombian population

Metabolic syndrome is a clinical condition that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and is related to insulin resistance. Although consensus statements establish the need for specific waist circumference cutoff points for each country to identify subjects with metabolic syndrome, these had not been defined in Colombia. This study defines the waist circumference cutoff points in men and women that best discriminate the presence of insulin resistance, establishes the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, and verifies the relationship between the two.
